The Biosphere Reserve features impressive canyons, mountains, beautiful waterfalls, and deep abysses, covering an area of 383,567 hectares. It is known as the "green jewel in the heart of Mexico."
327 bird species, 131 mammal species, 104 reptile species, and 32 amphibian species have been identified here. Additionally, the Reserve ranks second nationwide in butterfly diversity with 650 species. In terms of flora, the area boasts nearly 2,308 species of vascular plants, including 11 endemic species.
Sierra Gorda also offers an interesting encounter with colonial art, as within this rugged terrain, unique baroque buildings constructed by Franciscan missionaries in the 18th century can be found. These impressive colonial monuments were primarily built under the guidance of Fray Junípero Sierra, who organized and trained indigenous people to erect them.
In total, there are six missions, five of which are fully completed and well-preserved: Concá, Tancoyol, Landa, Tilazo, and Jalpan. These have been declared UNESCO World Heritage sites. The sixth mission, Bucareli, was never finished, but its architecture, along with the surrounding landscape, adds to the region's attractions.
Due to its vast expanse, there are many destinations to explore within the reserve, such as the Escanela River, Puente de Dios, Mirador Cuatro Palos, El Chuvejé Waterfall, Jalpan Dam, Las Adjuntas, San Juan de los Durán, and Sótano del Barro, among many other incredible corners offered by this reserve.
