It covers 139,577 hectares, a section of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, very close to its convergence with the Sierra Madre del Sur. It shares territory with the states of Colima and Jalisco andis considered one of the most important Protected Natural Areas in Western Mexico.

One of the characteristics of this natural area is that, like a giant sponge, it absorbs a large amount of rainwater.

Interest in this region derives from the existence of a primitive maize discovered in the mid-seventies. In fact, the reserve has more than two thousand plant species and it is estimated that at least 10% are endemic.

In addition, within the Reserve there are 3,000 plants species, 110 mammal species, 354 bird species, 80 reptiles species and 23 amphibians. Within this diversity it has some endemic species.

Among the activities that you can do in the reserve is hiking, since on your tours you can get to know beautiful landscapes that include streams, exuberant vegetation and some caves, which we always recommend visiting with a local guide.

Due to its biodiversity it is also an ideal place for bird watching and general flora and fauna.

Within the reserve there are several ranches and communities that work for the conservation of the area and are always very willing to talk and share their knowledge and experiences.
