The Montebello Lakes area, which was part of the old Tepancuapan hacienda, was the first protected area in Chiapas.
They are located on the border with Guatemala and are considered one of the most impressive natural beauties in the country.
There are 59 lakes or "uvalas", that is, old cenotes, which have different shapes, depths and colors that vary depending on the bottom soil, the vegetation and the light they receive. The bodies of water are framed by dense pine forests and mixed forests where it is easy to see bromeliads and orchids.
Two trails can be distinguished, the first leads to: La Encantada, Esmeralda, Bosque Azul, Ensueño and Agua Tinta; and the second to: Cañada, Pojoj, Tziscao and Dos Lagunas.
In Lake Tziscao, one of the largest and deepest, there are ecotourism cabins, restaurants, and horseback riding.
