The Palace of Fine Arts is a masterpiece of architecture.
The building combines elements of Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles.
During the Mexican Revolution, its construction was suspended and was not completed until 1934 by architect Federico Mariscal.
It is located to the east of the Alameda Central. It occupies the site that was once the Santa Isabel convent, and its construction began in 1904 under the direction of Italian architect Adamo Boari.
Its facade is made of Carrara marble. Inside the theater, there is a magnificent curtain with Tiffany stained glass. The famous crystal curtain serves as a stage curtain and is composed of nearly a million pieces of opalescent glass, each measuring 2 cm, representing the Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl volcanoes. This landscape could be admired from the windows of the National Palace in the early 20th century.
The ceiling of the theater is also a marvel. It features a transparent dome with a splendid work called "El Olimpo," where Apollo is surrounded by nine nymphs. This artwork was created by artist Géza Maróti.
Palacio de Bellas Artes
The vestibules house several frescoes by famous Mexican muralists such as Orozco, Siqueiros, Rivera, Tamayo, and Montenegro.
As a theater, it presents morning and evening performances. The presentation of the National Folkloric Ballet of Mexico is a tradition, but it also serves as the venue for the National Symphony Orchestra, the National Opera Company, and the Fine Arts Chamber Orchestra. It is considered the country's premier cultural venue.
The Manuel M. Ponce and Adamo Boari halls host recitals, book presentations, conferences, and other cultural events.
It has a pleasant cafeteria and a bookstore.
Across from this fabulous building is the Bank of Mexico, an exact replica of the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, Italy, and in contrast, the Torre Latinoamericana, which was the city's tallest building for many years.
