The Yucatan Peninsula is recognized as a very important area with an enormous diverse bird population due to its strategic location for migratory birds. You can find 537 bird species of the 1,062 that exist in Mexico, including 14 endemics.

More than two hundred bird species nest in the temperate parts of North America and visit the Peninsula, 35 as vagrants (a bird that is well out of its range in an unexpected area), while 128 species spend the winter each year in the region. Another 54 species use the Peninsula to rest and feed during their journey to Central and South America to spend the winter.

Among the endemic species found throughout the region are: the ocellated turkey, the Yucatecan parrot, the Yucatecan tapacamino, the huil tapacamino, the Yucatecan woodpecker, the Yucatecan flycatcher, the Yucatecan chara, the Yucatecan rattle, the meowing black, the Yucatecan tanager and the Yucatecan bagger.

The best way to enjoy the experience of bird watching and its natural history in Yucatan is to be accompanied by a local guide. This allows you to visit places you would not find elsewhere, as well as understand local customs, beliefs and practices.
