In Tamaulipas, thanks to its diversity of ecosystems you can find close to 500 bird species.

Beside, you can also find more than 600 butterfly species, many of them endemic.

CIUDAD VICTORIA

Altas Cumbres Canyon

It is a paradise for birds watching with more than 400 different species arrive here throughout the year. Another option is the Peregrina Canyon, within the Altas Cumbres Special Ecological Conservation Zone. Located in the Sierra Madre Oriental, only 20 minutes from Ciudad Victoria.

Troncones Park

Inside the park you can see a great variety of birds, among which are: hawks, red-headed woodpecker, red-headed parakeet, and the red-necked thick-billed or roller pigeon, among other species. It is located half an hour from Ciudad Victoria.

El Cielo Biosphere Reserve

En the reserve you will find 430 bird species, of which 225 are resident birds and 175 migratory. On any given day during the months of October to March you can watch a minimum of 60 different species such as the flag bird, the red-browed vireo and the common mulatto. It is important to mention that it is also an ideal place for butterfly watching because the reserve has more than 200 species.

Cañón de la Peregrina (Canyon)

It is a place where colorful and exotic endemic birds of the country live, such as: the Tamaulipan parrot, the red-headed parakeet and the thick red-necked bill. Located within the Special Zone of Ecological Conservation of Altas Cumbres, very close to Ciudad Victoria

Joya de Salas Lagoon

It is a natural formation of fresh water with a surface that includes more than 15 hectares. This is a stopover site where birds resta and feed during the migration. Located in the ejidal community 20 de Abril, an hour and a half from Ciudad Victoria.

In the area you can also visit the Las Guacamayas Nesting Canyon, where there is an extensive population of macaws that nest in this canyon covered mostly by oregano plants.
