The state of Oaxaca is one of the places with the highest bird species richness in the country.

In this territory there are 752 different bird species, an astonishingly high concentration of bird species larger that the number of bird species found in 163 countries. It also has 63 endemic species.

Centro Ecoturístico Ecoturixtlán (Ecotourism Center)

Located in Ixtlán, it offers tours for bird watching in one of the most important natural areas in the world. In the area you can find up to 400 species of birds and 350 species of butterflies.

Presa Piedra Azul

One of the ideal places for those who like bird watching is the Piedra Azul dam, where it is common to find herons, kingfishers and, during the month of January, three types of migratory birds from Canada. The "Benito Juárez" dam, very close to the town, is also a good place to practice this activity. It is located 20 minutes from Mitla and almost an hour from the city of Oaxaca.
