The Yucatan Peninsula has 548 species of birds, of which 224 are located in Cozumel.

The Island has 19 endemic species and subspecies, like: the Cozumelean thrasher, the Cozumel emerald hummingbird, the Yucatecan tanager and the yellow warbler.

Additionally, Cozumel is visited every year by more than 80 different species of migratory birds that take refuge from the winter in the lagoons and coasts of Cozumel, such as: American redstart, flaming warbler, zebra, yellow-throated warbler, roseate spoonbill, the diversity of Canadian ducks and the ibis, among others.

The season to observe migratory birds goes from October to March.
