The park encompasses 51,000 hectares (126,000 acres). It is a protected area spotted with fir and pine forests. It is the fourth highest peak in the country and rises above the Toluca basin.
The park is located within the so-called Neovolcanic Axis with altitudes that range between 3,000 and 4,500 meters above sea level. From 4,100 m above sea level the vegetation begins to disappear. The climate at this altitude is semi-cold-humid, producing heavy snowfall at the top during the winter season.
It is the only volcano in the world that can be reached by road and at the top there are two beautiful lagoons with crystal clear waters, Laguna del Sol (4,209 masl) and Laguna de la Luna (4,216 masl). They are a unique place to practice deep-sea diving where pre-Hispanic offerings have also been found.
The rim of the crater is elliptical and resembles a crown. In its crest there are two peaks El Águila (The Eagle) and El Fraile (The Friar).
If you want live an adventure there are tours that will provide the equipment required for trekking and hiking.
The trails selected will depend on what you want to do and experience. The most common and frequent begins with the Pluma, less than 4 miles from the volcano’s crater. It’s a route that almost everybody can do.
For the adventure route, it’s necessary to have good physical condition and the right equipment. You will require more than 3 hours, and you will be exposed to a humid climate and direct rays of the sun.
On the volcano’s slopes is Los Venados Park, with recreation and rest areas. It has kiosks with grills to enjoy a picnic with the family.
In addition to trekking in the park, you can rent ATVs, horseback riding, and go down on mountain bikes with downhill tracks.
The Nevado de Toluca National Park has three lodges, two equipped with all services and the last one with lodging service only.
In your visit we recommend you to carry a portable battery because due to the low temperatures the duration and maintenance of the batteries of cameras and cell phones are reduced.
Although any time of the year is good to visit the Nevado, if you enjoy the snow, it is best to go between December and February, although these months are freezing, so you should prepare for this weather. If you don’t like the cold, visit between June and July.
