Mexico City is surrounded by several mountains.

To the north by the Sierra de Guadalupe; to the east by the Sierra de Santa Catarina, including El Borrego with almost 2,800 meters above sea level and Cerro de la Estrella; to the west is the Cerro de Chapultepec and the Sierra de las Cruces; and to the south, the Ajusco volcano, the highest peak in the city at almost 4,000 meters above sea level, along with other volcanoes: Teuhtli and Tláloc at 3,600 meters above sea level.

The National Autonomous University of Mexico offers a program of facilities to practice mountaineering. The training takes place twice a week and is divided into five specialties: high mountain, rock climbing (classic and sport), canyoning or canyoning, speleology and exploration. To complement the theoretical knowledge, every 15 days camps are held to carry out practices.

Another important organization is the Hiking and Mountaineering Association of the National Polytechnic Institute, in charge of disseminating, regulating and organizing the practice of mountain activities such as: medium mountain, high mountain, rock climbing, speleology and mountain biking.

There are tours to visit the volcanoes that go to "La Joya" at 3700 meters above sea level, where you can walk the "Paso de Cortés". If you want, you can continue the ascent enjoying the flora and fauna of the place until you reach the first viewpoint at 3,800 meters above sea level, the second at 4,300 meters above sea level, or the third at 4,800 meters above sea level.

Another option is to explore the Pico del Águila in Ajusco, hiking through a pine forest until you reach the top. The road is not that difficult and the landscapes and experiences are unforgettable.
