Of the 8 species of sea turtles that exist worldwide, 7 come to lay their eggs on Mexican beaches.

Within these, three arrive to the coast of Colima: olive ridley turtle, black turtle and leatherback turtle that, as a curious fact, can measure almost as long as a small car.

In order to protect the turtles, the Cuyutlán Productive Development and Recreational Camp Center, also known as the Turtle Ecological Sanctuary, was created.

The center is dedicated to the care of some endangered species such as turtles, crocodiles and iguanas.

Here, in addition to appreciating sea turtles in captivity you can also learn about the process of spawning, incubation, birth and release of these species into their natural environment.

During the months of November to February, the visitor can release the newborn turtles and help them reach the sea.

You can visit the Palo Verde Estuary part of the Cuyutlán Lagoon. The place has an impressive mangrove swamp home to a wide variety of species that include everything from microorganisms to hundreds of birds. All visitors can get to know the estuary, there is an ecological tour in which you will also have valuable information about the entire place from an expert guide.

Walking through the mangroves you will have the opportunity to see the three species of mangroves that inhabit here: the white, red and black mangroves. During the tour you will be able to observe some of the residents of the mangrove, such as hundreds of birds, crocodiles and snakes, among many others. The tours take place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to visit the crocodile farm to admire these huge reptiles and the iguanarium, where you will not cease to be amazed by the green iguanas that can measure up to 2 m (7 ft) long.

The center gives environmental workshops to provide information about sea turtles, crocodiles, iguanas, the estuary, the sea, the palm grove, etc.

Hours: From 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Closed on Wednesdays.

Visit an Ecological Turtle Sanctuary after an adventure through the mangroves of the Cuyutlán Lagoon and experience an unforgettable day.
