This system of caves and galleries is one of the most spectacular geographical accidents in the state. It is located on the edge of the Balsas River depression at the mouth of the Chontalcuatlán and San Jerónimo underground rivers.

To reach its entrance, it is necessary to descend 450 steps in the middle of exuberant vegetation to find a magnificent gallery where the adventure begins.

The entrance to the caves is massive but the paths are narrow and are super slippery in parts but it has plenty of railings to hold on to.

A trail covers 1,000 m is illuminated by multicolored lights. These lights cast eerie shadows on the cavern walls.

Immediately you begin to identify the rock formations that are located in the chambers that have been related by the popular imagination with names such as Christ, the eagle, the lamps and the Bear, to name a few.

At one spot the cavern wall seems to form a skull that is clearly visible when illuminated. Another shape in the cave looks like the Batman symbol. A third impressive structure is a pair of stalagmites that, when illuminated, cast a shadow on the cavern wall. The structure looks like a couple dancing when light moves behind it.

If you like adventure, you can continue the journey through the underground river El Zapote, which is a tributary of the Chontacoatlán River. For this adventure you will start with a 20 m rappel in the middle of total darkness, only illuminated with your lamp. This route covers approximately 800 m.

To get to the other end of the cave, you will have to pass some obstacles such as pools, underground currents and rocks, including a pre-Hispanic shrine to the God Tlaloc.

But if you just want to conect with nature, apparently the caves are so rich in minerals that you can come to visit and crawl into tight spaces between the rocks to meditate. Your mind benefit from the meditation and your body will feel better due to the healing affects of the minerals.

The locals say that Las Grutas de la Estrella are where darkness is seen and silence is heard.
