Mexico city is being recognized in the global community of amateur cyclists as a destination for world-class riding.
If you love to bike this big city has a variety of options for you. There is a popular bike-share program, and every Sunday streets, like Reforma and many other in the upscale Condesa neighborhood, are shut down for hours for cycling.
Several bike shops organize early-morning group rides during the week and longer excursions during the weekend. Beside, there are several ecotourism parks and protected areas ideal for biking, such as:
Los Dinamos
Among Mexico City’s bicycling enthusiasts, this remarkably rugged urban park on the outer edge of the city is a rite of passage.
This is an ideal place to practice Cross Country and mountain biking in the descent modality, known as Downhill.
The park offers protected bike paths with banked curves, ramps, etc., in a three-kilometre descent that takes just five minutes. Some national Downhill competitions take place in this park.
If you are able to pedal up to the top you are not a “novice” because you have to make your way up the steady incline all the way to the top. As the road snakes upward, brief breaks in the trees provide glimpses of the spectacular views.
Mountain Biking in Mexico City
Cerro del Picacho
You can pedal up the trails to reach the Cerro del Picacho viewpoint at 2,972 meters above sea level. The area has infrastructure for the practice of mountain biking with four circuits that offer different degrees of difficulty.
El Ajusco
In Ajusco there are several very good routes and one of the best in the area is inside the San Nicolás Totolapan Ejidal Park, which has 115 km of mountain biking trails.
The track has wild sections, steps, rocks, branches and a fair amount of mud.
There are trails for those who like long distances and that connect to the Bosque de los Dinamos or the Desierto de los Leones.
One of the favorite routes to practice cross-country is the ascent to the virgin, which consists of 6 km of paddle up and a ramp of 2,900 meters above sea level to 3,157 meters above sea level. If you have enough training you can climb another 5 km, although the ascents become more complicated until you reach a large valley.
Additionally, it offers special trails to practice Downhill, which makes it one of the favorites for those who like the extreme adventures.
Desierto de los Leones National Park
This is one of the favorite places to practice MTB in CDMX. In the park there are several routes for mountain biking. Some are very easy appropriate for beginners and some others are more challenging.
If you love biking you have to try the trail that goes from Pantanos station or the access point to Cruz Blanca, a viewpoint. This route has 10 km of ascent and offers an approximate drop of 2,880 meters above sea level to 3,420 meters above sea level. If you are in good condition and have experience, you can paddle up to the top of Cerro de San Miguel at a height of 3,790 meters above sea level.
This park also has technical bike paths offerig more obstacles and are excellent for those who practice All Mountain. Some of these paths are: Escalones, Formula 1 and Disneyland, among others.
You can paddle all year round, although you have to be more careful during the rainy season.
San Nicolás Totolapan Ecological Park
This is an excellent place to practice this exciting sport in the middle of nature, especially downhill. Experts can reach a speed of up to 60 km per hour amid trunks, roots, rocks that you will find on its exciting trails.
La Mexicana Park
The park has over 100,000 m2 of gardens, two lakes and an attractive bicycle path.
Other options to practice this sport are: the Eco-tourism Park of San Bernabé Ocotepec, with more than 330 ha. of forests, the Parque Desierto de los Leones and the Ecotourism Park "Rancho los Laureles".
