La Paz is an internationally famous diving destination, with at least 25 ideal places to enjoy the underworld.
The coastal regions of the bay are characterized by sinuous terrain with large chasms contrasting with steep elevations, resulting in a wide diversity of marine fauna.
The reefs are the refuge of about 270 species of fish and more than 4,000 invertebrates. For the most part these rocky reefs are protected from strong currents and the underwater landscapes consist of rocky islands mixed with underwater pinnacles.
Seasons
The best season for diving in La Paz is from November to May, although from June to October there are also good conditions for diving and at this time it is not difficult to find hammerhead sharks.

El Bajo
Located to the east of Espiritu Santo Island, in the middle of the open sea, it is a well-known place for underwater filmmakers to meet hammerhead sharks.
It has a depth of 6 to more than 30 m (20 to 100 ft) and is recommended for advanced divers.
It is a seamount that consists of 3 mountains that do not rise above sea level, due to their nature they are the perfect habitat for a large number of marine species. Here you can find hammerhead sharks and huge tuna, as well as giant manta rays and a wide variety of tropical fish.
On the coasts of the island you can also practice night snorkeling.
Diving in La Paz
Los Islotes (The Islets)
Los Islotes are two groups of rocky outcrops located to the north of Espiritu Santo Island with a depth of 5 to 30 m (16 to 100 ft). One of the large rocks forms a natural arch, a real magical place where sea lions usually gather.
In addition to the playful sea lions, you will find various species of tropical fish. Here diving is for all levels and is excellent all year round.
Isla Ballena (Whale Island)
It is a small island off the coast of Isla Espiritu Santo and has a depth of 5 to 18 m (16 to 59 ft). It is an excellent place for beginners where there are magnificent fan corals.
Punta Lobos
It has a depth that goes from 5 to 25 m (16 to 82 ft) and is in the open sea. It was once a sea lion colony and is an incredible place to explore the underwater landscape, although some experience is recommended. On the reef you can see a wide variety of fish and seahorses.
Salvatierra
At a depth of 18 m (59 ft) is a ferry boat that sank in 1976, which has become an artificial reef. Her hull is covered in black coral and gorgonians, and it's easy to see colorful parakeets and large groupers.
It is recommended for divers with some experience and you can not enter the interior of the boat.
Suwanee Reef
It is the perfect place for beginner divers, with depths of 3 and 9 m (10 to 30 ft), on a small coral reef with an abundance of multicolored fish, manta rays and octopus, among many other marine species.
You can also see some sea lions and it is considered one of the favorite sites for marine photographers.
Las Animas
It is a diving paradise in the Sea of Cortez. It is a small island inhabited by a large colony of pelicans. Under the waters that surround it there are interesting underwater mountains, pinnacles, walls and caves.
La Reina (The Queen)
It is an islet to the north of Isla Cerralvo, with huge concentrations of pelagic fish and where it is common to meet giant manta rays.
Located at a depth of 25 m (82 ft) and is one of the most attractive sites in the area.
Here you can dive with giant manta rays, turtles and a large number of tropical fish.
La Reinita (The Little Queen)
With a depth of 8 to 30 m (26 to 100 ft) it is a very good place for beginners. This rock formation is located to the west of Cerralvo Island and offers a great variety of corals inhabited by multicolored fish, groupers, moray eels, and seahorses, among many others.
San Rafaelito
With a depth of 5 to 25 m (16 to 82 ft) it is ideal for beginners. Here there is a rock where a lighthouse is located so it is very easy to identify and it is the habitat of a small colony of sea lions.
This reef is one of the favorite places for night dives where you can see a wide variety of species, especially octopuses.
Fang Ming
It is a Chinese ship that is located at a depth of 22 m (72 ft) and is 54 m (177 ft) long. The vessel was used for the illegal trafficking of immigrants, which is why it was confiscated and sunk in 1999.
It is a good option to observe the development of artificial reefs, they are located in the San Lorenzo channel between La Isla Ballena (Whale Island) and La Isla Espiritu Santo (Holy Spirit Island).
This place is for advanced divers and, in addition to being able to enter in the boat, you can admire the magnificent black coral that has covered its surface. It is very common to find large turtles in this place.
C-59
It is an American boat that was donated to Mexico to turn it into a reef and it is found at a depth of 18 m (59 ft).
It is a place for advanced divers and you can explore the boat and find a great variety of marine life.
Gordo Banks
It is an underwater mountain with a plateau where you can find hammerhead sharks, groupers, sea horses and a wide variety of rays.
Revillagigedo Islands
These volcanic islands are a calm place with good weather most of the year and on its coasts there are a large number of pelagic species, especially hammerhead sharks.
Giant manta rays with wingspans of up to 6 m (20 ft.) can be seen all year long, and in the early months of the year you may see several humpback whales breeding in this area. However, it is precisely in these months that visibility decreases due to plankton blooms that are very common on a full moon.
At Roca Partida there is a 3 m (10 ft.) high seamount with an almost straight wall that plunges into the abyss, where you can see huge tunas, humpback whales (from January to March) and whale sharks (from October to March).
San Pedro Island
It is home to hundreds of sea lions, so on every dive you get to swim with playful babies.
