Xochimilco is a cultural heritage site inscribed in 1987 on the World Heritage List.
It is a paradise located in the southeastern part of the city, 28 kilometers from downtown. Xochimilco has a unique charm and is a blend of natural wonders and historical monuments. Its network of canals and artificial islands, known as chinampas, is an exceptional example of the Xochimilcas' skill—the first Nahuatl tribe to settle in the Valley of Mexico—to improve their habitat.
This is a place where you can navigate the ancient canals aboard typical trajineras, enjoying delicious Mexican snacks accompanied by marimba or mariachi music.
Las Chinampas
Xochimilco is a place full of ancestral traditions, such as the "chinampas," which can be described as man-made islands where flowers and a wide variety of vegetables are cultivated. Nowadays, you can visit them to learn more about their operation and enjoy a delicious meal made with fresh products.
The chinampas were built on what was once a large lake covering over 200 kilometers. Now, Xochimilco spans 14 kilometers of navigable canals.

Embarcaderos (Docks)
From its ten docks (Cuemanco, Caltongo, Fernando Celada, Salitre, Belém, San Cristóbal, Zacapa, Las Flores, Nuevo Nativitas, and Belem de las Flores), you can hire rides on over 200 trajineras and experience a very unique journey. You can combine traditional snacks with marimba, harp, mariachi, and Norteña music.
PLACES TO VISIT IN XOCHIMILCO
Isla de las Muñecas (Island of the Dolls)
During the tour, you can visit unique places like the Island of the Dolls, a site created by Don Julián Santana consisting of many dolls hung in trees. Although somewhat eerie, it's worth a visit.
Convento franciscano de San Bernardino (Convent)
Founded in 1535, its church was built in the 16th century with a Plateresque facade and a Renaissance altarpiece. Another colonial building in the area is the Chapel of El Rosario, dating back to the 18th century.
Market
Xochimilco is also known for its enormous diversity of flowers and ornamental plants, available in its 4 specialized markets (Cuemanco, Madre Selva, San Luis Tlaxialtemalco, and Palacio de la Flor Market) or in its countless greenhouses.
San Luis Tlaxialtemalco Forest
It is an ideal place to be in contact with beautiful natural surroundings.
Xochimilco Ecological Park

Chinampero Michmani Ecotourism Center
It is ideal for spending quality time with the whole family and enjoying nature. Activities such as cabin rentals, kayaking, fishing, and children's games are offered. It also features an interesting axolotl museum.
