It is a protected natural area of 15 thousand hectares that consists of a mountainous complex that offers a great variety of landscapes.
The main access to the mountains is located in the west of the town of Tecolotlan and has a forested landscape of pines and holm oaks, as well as waterfalls and springs.
It is the habitat of white-tailed deer, pumas, wild boars, armadillos, and foxes, among others.
Top spots to visit in Sierra de Quila are:
El Cerro del Huehuentón
With its 2,540 masl it is one of the most important in the State of Jalisco. On its north side is born a tributary of the Ameca River that flows into the sea in front of Puerto Vallarta and on its south side there are several streams that are worth exploring. If you are in good physical condition, you can climb to the top and enjoy an unforgettable view of the mountains.
Piedras Blancas
This place is named for the huge whitish rocks that measure more than 100 m high. This peculiarity of this area is a strange phenomena of magnetism.
La Cienega Waterfall
It is a beautiful fall that runs over huge stepped rocks and has a good flow throughout the year. It is surrounded by pine and oak forests.
La Cienega Base Camp
It is a place with camping areas and various services.
La Lira
It is a recreation area known as the lyre because there is a very unique pine tree that resembles this musical instrument and has a height of 22 m. In fact, it is considered an icon of the entire Sierra de Quila.
Tecolotlán Waterfall
This spectacular waterfall has a drop of 100 m that runs through dense canyon vegetation. This place is not easily accessible, since it is located in the most abrupt part of the mountain range. However, it is worth the effort.
Presa del Ahogado (Dam)
It is a beautiful place ideal for camping, this body of water is surrounded by huge pine and oak trees.
Salto de la Campana
This waterfall has a drop of 30 m and is only 8 km north of Tocolotlán. Therefore, it is not difficult to reach this beautiful place that is made up of a ravine with exuberant vegetation.
Santa Rosa Waterfall
This 30 m high waterfall is surrounded by pine and oak forests. It is reached through a cobbled road and is 32 km from San Martín de Hidalgo.
Mirador Tecolotlán (Viewpoint)
It is an impressive viewpoint that allows you to have a panoramic view of the entire sierra and its various natural attractions. You can get there by taking the main highway Tecolotlán – Quila el Grande.

Location
Located in the vicinity of the community of Quila el Grande, 116 km, approximately 2 and a half hours southwest of Zapopan.
