Its name comes from the Nahuatl language and means "on fertile land."
This town in the Milpa Alta delegation is famous for its National Mole Fair, a gastronomic specialty of the locals, celebrated annually since 1977.
The first records of what is now the mole industry in San Pedro Atocpan date back to 1927 when the population began preparing red mole to sell in the Merced market. During the 1950s, the residents of the town started manufacturing mole, and two decades later, the majority of the population was producing and selling the product.
Today, as you walk through its streets, you can breathe in the aroma of spices, chocolate, and, in general, delicious mole that invites you to visit the establishments that sell it or the restaurants that prepare this delightful dish in various ways.
This place has preserved its village atmosphere, traditions, and history.
Among the places you shouldn't miss when you visit San Pedro Actopan are:
San Pedro Atocpan
Plaza Principal or Plaza San Martín (Main Square)
It is a spacious area with trees, gardens, and children's playgrounds. The kiosk in the center is made of concrete.
Parroquia y el Ex Convento de San Pedro (Parish and Former Convent)
It is a Franciscan building constructed in 1680. There is a large plaza or slope leading to the entrance of its enormous atrium. Its facade features slender stone columns that frame four niches with sculptures of saints.
The access arch displays faces of angels and other decorative elements. The choir window, located above the frieze at the top of the entrance, has a beautiful stained glass. Inside, the decoration in the vaults of the nave stands out, with blue and gold colors.
The main altar houses the image of the patron saint, San Pedro, framed by a cypress tree. It also has a chapel and a small cloister.
Santuario del Señor (Sanctuary)
It is a sanctuary of great proportions, and reaching it requires climbing a long staircase. It has a wide nave where several colorful stained glass windows can be seen, but what catches the attention is the highly venerated Black Christ, almost two meters tall, made of corn paste and dating back to the 16th century.
From the temple's atrium, there is an unbeatable panoramic view, not only of the town but also of the surrounding natural landscapes.
Templo de San Martín
It is more modest but also worth a visit. It has an access arch, and the pilasters that support the frieze feature angel faces, whirligigs, and some vegetal elements.
This facade dates back to 1560, and on the cornice, two bicephalous eagles can be distinguished. The building has only one tower and a bell-less bell-gable. It is surrounded by several restaurants and establishments where you can buy the traditional mole.
Surrounding Areas
The rural area and the towns that surround it also offer a series of attractions.
It is an area specialized in the cultivation of nopales (prickly pears), which have many nutritional properties and have even been used in recent years for the creation of organic leather.
