The Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley is a mixed site inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2018. The Historic Center of Querétaro is a cultural heritage site inscribed in 1996 on the UNESCO World Heritage List..
It is located in the southeast of the state of Puebla and covers 490,186 hectares distributed among 21 municipalities in the state of Puebla and 30 municipalities in the state of Oaxaca. 490,186 hectáreas distribuidas en 21 municipios del estado de Puebla y 30 municipios del estado de Oaxaca.
The reserve is a complex system of mountains and valleys that generate great biodiversity and different ecosystems. It is the most biologically diverse arid or semi-arid zone in all of North America. It has one of the highest concentrations of columnar cacti in the world; 45 out of Mexico's 70 species are found in this area. Notable species include globular cacti, which can reach up to three meters in height, and columnar cacti, which can reach up to 20 meters in height. un complejo sistema de sierras y valles que generan una gran biodiversidad y diferentes ecosistemas. Millions of years ago, this desert was an ocean, so it offers spectacular and extravagant landscapes that include San Juan Raya, a place that takes you back in time to the era of dinosaurs, as marine fossils and impressive dinosaur footprints have been found here.
In addition to its clear importance as a unique ecosystem, this area has the earliest records of the domestication of maize and other species throughout Mesoamerica. In the Cave of Maize in Coxcatlán, located in the Tehuacán Valley, the oldest maize in Mesoamerica was found.
Different types of tours are offered within the reserve. For example, the nocturnal tour provides a completely different perspective of the desert's nightlife and allows you to enjoy a beautiful starry sky.
Another option is to visit Cañada del León, where you can observe impressive basalt columns, or the Cuenca de los Músicos, where there are over 200 rock paintings.
If you enjoy birdwatching, here you can admire up to 140 different species, and guided tours are offered where you can see the great horned owl, the golden eagle, and the Balsas flycatcher, among many others. búho cornudo, el águila real y la matraca del Balsas, entre otros muchos.
You can also take a tour of Cerro Cuthá, which houses the archaeological remains of a citadel belonging to the Popoloca culture, including the tomb of the ruler Xapotl.
Walking among maguey plantations is another attractive option offered by this reserve, in addition to trying pulque, which is produced in many communities in the area.
Within the area, you will find the Helia Bravo Hollis Botanical Garden, located on the Tehuacán-Huajapan road, where you can explore its ecological trails with a community guide.
