In this area, the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea converge, encompassing the municipalities of San Felipe, Ría Lagartos, and Tizimín.

It features a unique natural beauty with light blue waters and one of the largest and most important mangrove and petén areas in the Yucatán Peninsula. It is a "ría," a type of coastal inlet that forms a lagoon.

The combination of coastal dunes, mangroves, grasslands, reed beds, petenes, and low deciduous forests fosters tremendous biodiversity. Here, you can find 450 species of vertebrates, 100 vascular plant species, several species of mangroves, and 280 bird species, including hundreds of pink flamingos that use Ría Lagartos as a nesting area.

In this reserve you can also find a large number of Tho birds, considered one of the most beautiful birds in the region. It is a true paradise for nature lovers.

Within this reserve, you can also find a picturesque fishing village of the same name as the reserve, characterized by its wide sandy streets, houses with pastel-colored wooden frames, and a pleasant central park that serves as a meeting point for locals.

Another attraction is its delicious gastronomy, which you can enjoy in various informal restaurants with palm roofs and tables overlooking the beach.

Its beaches are renowned as one of the main nesting areas for sea turtles, especially the hawksbill and green turtles.

One notable site is "Petenmac," which is a petén (a type of wetland) with a freshwater spring surrounded by palm trees that the locals call "mac." The trees bear fruits that resemble pears but are not as juicy or sweet.

Activities you can engage in at Ría Lagartos include ecotourism excursions, bird watching, boat tours, especially during sunsets, and if you're seeking more adrenaline, you can opt for a nighttime tour to observe crocodiles.

You should also try the Mayan bath, which involves visiting the mud mounds and covering your entire body. It is said to hydrate and soften the skin.

Inside the reserve, you can find Las Coloradas, which boasts a peculiar landscape due to its salt flats that give off a beautiful pink color. Don't miss the opportunity to visit this salt mirror, which offers stunning photos for your Instagram feed.
