It covers approximately 19,400 ha and pine and oak forests are the predominant forest types in the region. It is one of the oldest reserves in the country.
In the midst of the dense forests rise the great volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Ixtaccihuatl, which are the second and third highest peaks in the country.
It is an ideal place for camping and hiking to fully enjoy nature. There are several trails to walk and many of them can be done with an environmental guide, several routes start from Paso de Cortés.
You can also practice mountaineering, since you have the enormous challenge of the two imposing volcanoes.
