Originally known by pre-Hispanic cultures as Matlalcuéyatl, La Malinche is a volcano that reaches an elevation of 4,461 meters above sea level. Due to its altitude, the climate exhibits great variations, ranging from sub-arid and rainy cold climates to cold climates that bring snowfall and freezing temperatures for a significant part of the year.

It is possible to ascend to the summit, provided that a good group is organized and its members have excellent physical condition and experience, as the higher sections are characterized by rugged terrain, deep canyons, and steep cliffs, such as the one in San Juan.

It is possible to reach the ancient crater, which shows evident signs of glacial action. Near the main volcano, you can find Cerro Xalapezco, a prominent adventitious and squat cone.
