It is believed to have been a sacred place for the ancient Zapotecs and consists of two impressive petrified waterfalls formed thousands of years ago by the flow of carbonated water in the middle of the mountains. From the springs, the water descends through rugged cliffs, creating cascades with a characteristic white color that reach over 200 meters in height. This magnificent phenomenon is only replicated in Pamukkale, Turkey.
The spring area that gives rise to this place was used to create a large pool that has now become a natural spa with regularly temperate water and magnificent turquoise-colored pools.
Hierve el Agua has been recognized as a probable sacred site for the ancient Zapotecs. Over 2,500 years ago, a complex irrigation system was built here, of which significant vestiges still remain.
The water temperature is slightly higher than the ambient temperature, fluctuating between 22°C and 25°C.
If you are physically fit and enjoy hiking, you can explore the trails that lead to the second waterfall and even continue walking to admire the waterfall from below. The journey is approximately 2 kilometers downhill and 2 kilometers uphill, but it is truly worth it.
Currently, there are restrooms, changing rooms, palapas, a swimming pool, and small eateries.
