El Xitle

Explore the caves in Xitle Volcano

One of the most extraordinary adventures you can experience in the Valley of Mexico is the possibility of exploring the two systems of lava tubes or tunneling caves that were formed as a result of the explosion of the Xitle volcano to the south of the city.

These impressive tunnels reach more than 300-meter (984 feet) in length with galleries that have ceilings that exceed 10-meter (32 feet) in height.

The first system is known as Padierna and is located on the Los Encinos property, while the other is the Xitle system, which is located on the border of the ejido lands of San Andrés Totoltepec and the Ecological Park of Mexico City. The latter is made up of six caverns.

These caverns can be explored with the guides and the necessary equipment, their exploration requires some training and good physical condition, because there are several challenges such as humidity, water filtration and several rappelling ascents and descents. However, being able to contemplate these unique caves is an unforgettable experience.
