This peculiar desert is made up of white hills that are the result of calcium sulfate crystals blown by the wind from the bottom of an ancient lake in the region. These dunes, due to the effect of the wind, constantly advance, changing their capricious shapes.
The Gypsum Dunes measure just over 800 ha. They have several peculiarities such as that if seen from the air they have the shape of a butterfly and since they are made from snail dust that dates back more than 200 million years, if you are here at night, the crystals of fossilized snails shine, so you can see the brightness of the stars in the sky and also the glitters between the dunes.
Additionally, during the day the flashes of sunlight are reflected, so combined with the intense blue of the sky that characterizes this area, you can enjoy a unique landscape.
It is said to have a composition similar to that of the planet Mars and there are only four places in the world with these characteristics, in addition to the Gypsum Dunes in Cuatro Ciénegas, New Mexico, Texas and Tunisia.
