It is a protected area of 16 ha that is made up of a desert of fine sand, where the wind forms dunes. The impressive desert of fine sands is the product of the erosion of natural elements by the passage of time.

It recalls a Middle Eastern landscape and has been used as a location for several films such as El Topo, Fallen Angel, Saving Private Pérez, One Man's Hero and Dragonball Evolution, to name a few.

The climate in this region is extreme, most of the year with average maximum temperatures of 35 degrees and minimums of 25 in summer, maximums of 18 degrees and minimums of 5 degrees in winter.

The vegetation of this municipality is typical of semi-desert areas. As for its fauna, you can find an endemic lizard known as Uma Exsul, as well as other animals typical of the desert such as vipers, snakes, roadrunners, hawks, coyotes, etc.

In the Dunes of Bilbao you can practice sandboarding, similar to snow boarding, only with sun and sand. You can also be dragged on a board by an ATV through the dunes, similar to water skiing or wake boarding.

Due to the extreme weather, it is better to visit the dunes very early or at sunset, plus you will have the best photos at that time.
