The Yaxhá River descends its limestone bed in steps, forming a series of impressive waterfalls that create natural pools contained by calcareous dikes, the so-called "gours" in geological terminology.

The limestone bed gives the waters here a turquoise-blue effect.

The best time to visit the Agua Azul Waterfalls is from November to February. Although during the rainy season, silt turns the waters brown, so you have to time your journey right if you want to see the water blue— in which case, avoid June – October. During this time, it rains the most, the water levels rise significantly, and swimming is not possible.

Keep in mind that there is no cell network coverage throughout the area, but you can purchase a card at any stand to communicate and share your photos on social media.

The river is surrounded by breath-taking green vegetation. The waters here can be deceptive, so caution is advised when bathing. There are cabins and a restaurant, as well as a tourist center.
