The whole canyon is some 80 km long and ends at the Presa Nezahualcóyotl (Nezahualcóyotl lake, also called Malpaso lake), which is an artificial lake created by the hydroelectric Malpaso Dam. The La Venta river meets here with the Grijalva river that ends up in the Gulf of Mexico.
The river is 80 to 90 meters wide in some parts, with drastic changes at 10 meters wide, and there is even a part where the walls come together becoming a cavern.
It is a geological fracture with vertical walls up to 400 meters high with caves that served as shelter for earlier settlers in the area and in several of them ceramics have been found. Most of these have been attributed to the Zoque and date back to pre-hispanic times of about 600 – 1250 AD, when these caves were used during ceremonies. You will also find rapids and waterfalls, whose beauty is only accessible for highly prepared expeditions with specialized equipment. However, if you are not an adrenaline seeker or an expert, there is also a park that you can explore by speedboat and enjoy a nice ride.
