This area is an impressive field full of stones that was formed thousands of years ago by intense volcanic activity. Today there are millions of rocks of all sizes along with volcanic ash. 

Due to these conditions there are very few plants that have been able to flourish in these conditions. There is a local legend that says that there are people who have found fruit-fields areas in the El Malpaís Petrified Field, and even eaten their fruits, but they never find them again when they try to return.
