The foundation stone was laid in 1902.

The architectural project was led by architect Antonio Rivas Mercado, while the statue was supervised by Enrique Alciati, who brought the marbles from Italy and oversaw the bronze casting of the Angel of Independence.

This statue has become the symbol of the city. The Independence Column measures approximately 39 meters in height, and the angel on top of it is 3 meters tall and weighs 7 tons.

The angel is made of bronze with a gold coating. The statues at the base of the column represent law, justice, war, and peace. There are also statues of independence heroes such as Guerrero, Morelos, Mina, and Bravo.

All these statues are the work of Alciati.

There is an observation deck that can be accessed by climbing 200 steps in groups of no more than 6 people, and a permit from the Cuauhtémoc Delegation is also required. The view from there is privileged.
