COLORFUL OTOMÍ TRADITIONS
The Magical Town is protected by the Malitzin Volcano.
It is a colonial city full of history, founded in the year 1534, and over the years, it has remained faithful to its traditions, where many aspects of Otomí culture still prevail.
The city is famous for its fair, which takes place from July 31st to August 30th, accompanied by music, dances, traditional food, donkey races, amusement rides, and fireworks.
On August 14th, "The Night That Nobody Sleeps" is celebrated, and artisans showcase their talents by decorating over seven kilometers of streets with sawdust carpets and flower rugs featuring various figures and colors to welcome the procession of the Virgin of Charity. The following Saturday, the Huamantlada takes place, a tradition that has been celebrated for many years, where fierce fighting bulls are released to be bullfighted by amateurs in the main streets and alleys of the city, which still retain their colonial charm.
Due to the worldwide fame of their beautiful carpets, a lovely tradition called "Magical Saturdays" has been established, where a typical colorful carpet is created from noon onwards in Margarita Maza de Juárez Alley, next to the City Hall. The celebration continues in the evening with the matachines dance and fireworks.
During your visit, you must not miss out on the delicious panela de muégano, a typical sweet treat from the region.
Huamantla is located just 48 km (45 minutes) from the city of Tlaxcala, 56 km (an hour and a quarter) from the city of Puebla, and 188 km (3 hours) from Mexico City.

Templo y Ex Convento de San Luis Obispo
It is a Franciscan construction dating back to 1585. Located in the Main Square, it stands out for its colorful façade.
The temple features a stone-carved tower and a beautiful churrigueresque altarpiece dedicated to the Virgin.
Inside, it houses a remarkable collection of religious paintings, beautiful estofado sculptures, and a magnificent solomonic altarpiece dedicated to the Virgin Mary and attributed to Miguel Cabrera. This 17th-century altarpiece, covered in gold leaf, has the peculiarity of being asymmetrical.
Palacio Municipal (City Hall)
This neoclassical-style two-story building houses colorful murals by the local artist Desiderio Hernández Xochitiotzin, as well as a reproduction of the Huamantla Codex and a photography exhibition.
Convento Franciscano
This Franciscan convent is characterized by a stone-carved tower and the image of the Black Christ, highly venerated by the locals.
Iglesia de la Virgen de la Caridad
The people of Huamantla dedicate their major celebration to the Virgin of Charity, with the creation of sawdust carpets throughout the month of August.
National Puppet Museum (MUNATI)
It is a unique museum, founded in memory of the Rosete Aranda family, who established the most successful puppet company in the 19th century, amassing over 5,000 pieces.
Museo Taurino (Bullfighting Museum)
It offers an excellent collection of bullfighters' costumes, posters, and other items related to bullfighting.
Museo de la Ciudad (City Museum)
It occupies what was once a colonial-era troje (granary) of the Franciscan convent and exhibits archaeological pieces, portraits, and various artifacts that narrate the town's history.
Haciendas Pulqueras
Since pulque is one of the region's typical products, it is very interesting to visit pulque haciendas such as Tenexac and Casa Malinche, which offer delicious meals and a unique landscape framed by the volcanoes.
