Its name refers to the buildings surrounding it, which correspond to different historical periods.
The Tenochtitlan Culture is represented by a series of pyramids and ruins that are the remains of the Tlatelolco, famous for hosting the most important commercial tianguis of pre-Hispanic Mexico. The National Museum of Anthropology and History has an excellent scale model that illustrates this space.
In this pre-Hispanic part, important remnants can be seen, such as the Temple of Ehécatl-Quetzalcóatl, the Temple M or Calendárico, the Building W or Palace, the Temple L and X or of the Paintings, the Tlatelolca Main Temple, the Temple I or Great Basement, the Northern Tzompantli Altar, and the remains of some walls.
If you want to learn more about the pre-Hispanic history of the place, you can also visit the Site Museum, located at one end of the Convent in the Caja de Agua. Here, the pieces found at the site are displayed, including a mural considered the first testimony of mestizo syncretism in New Spain.
The Spanish Culture is represented by the Convent and Temple of Santiago Tlatelolco. This temple is one of the first built after the conquest, dating back to 1527, although the majority that remains today is from 1610. With the Reform Laws, the church was used as a warehouse, and the convent served as a prison. It wasn't until the mid-20th century that it regained its use as a church. It preserves a beautiful 17th-century relief and several historically valuable paintings.
Also corresponding to the colonial era is the Caja del Agua, which used to provide drinking water to the indigenous people of Santiago Tlatelolco. Although it was closed in the 17th century, it has been recovered and showcases some of the first hydraulic works of the conquistadors.
Lastly, the Modern Mexico Culture is represented by the Tlatelolco Tower, currently housing the Cultural University Center.
