Its name in Purépecha means "Place on the other side" and it is located in Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro and the Angahuan town.
It is the youngest volcano in all of America, since it was born in 1943, destroying two populations: San Juan Parangaricutiro, moved to a region near Uruapan, and the town of Paricutín, which gave its name to the new volcano.
Its eruption lasted for almost 10 years but there were no human victims.
Of the old town of San Juan, only the towers of its church are now visible, trapped between a sea of ash and volcanic rock, which has become a tourist attraction for the town of Angahuan.
In just one day it grew 30 m and after a month it already had an altitude of 148 m. It currently measures 424 m.
It is considered a "cinder cone", meaning that it is a small volcano that only erupts once, unlike huge volcanoes such as Popocatépetl or Nevado de Toluca that can erupt multiple times during their lives.
