This volcano has an approximate height of 3,100 meters above sea level, is part of the Sierra Chinchinautzín Volcanic Field. It is located on the slopes of Ajusco. Its cone has a diameter of 250 m and 50 m depth.
Its last great eruption is estimated to have been during the year 76 AD and gave rise to an entire area known as the Pedregal, from the petrified lava that covered the area. This eruption also was the cause of the abandonment of the pre-Hispanic city of Cuicuilco, one of the first urban settlements of the Preclassic period.
This place is full of stories and legends, so it has been able to keep a mystical character. Currently the entire volcano is covered with vegetation, so if you want to discover the crater, you have to climb to the top.
To get to the top there are trails, although some parts are very steep, especially when you get closer to the highest parts. Along the way there are also some lava caves.
The landscape offered by the top is extraordinary, so your effort is really worth it. You can go down into some of the lava tunnels and go into the depths of the volcano, for which you will have to do short rappelling trips.
You can also live the unique experience of camping inside the crater of the volcano. If you do this during the summer months, you have an additional attraction that is the thousands of fireflies that illuminate you at night.
