It is a Marine Park that consists of a system that includes 23 coral reefs located along the coastal strip in front of the municipalities of Veracruz, Boca del Rio, and Alvarado.
Notable reefs include Anegada de Afuera, Anegadilla, El Cabezo, La Blanquilla, El Rizo, La Galleguita, as well as those named after islands or islets such as Verde, Santiaguillo, De Enmedio, Anegada de Adentro, Pájaros, and Sacrificios.
In this area, most of the underwater ecosystems have an elongated shape and a northwest to southwest orientation. Seagrass meadows and macroalgae can be found in the lagoon reef zone.
The system includes fire coral barriers, elk horn coral, and rice coral, along with round conglomerates of brain and star coral, inhabited by a rich marine life including sponges, sea urchins, stars, and a variety of colorful fish.
Within the system, the reef located in front of Anton Lizardo is larger and, due to its characteristics, is ideal for beginner divers.
On the other hand, experienced divers will have a great opportunity to be amazed during their dives, as there are more than 350 sunken ships in the area.
