The Biosphere Reserve is located in the south of the state in the Balsas Basin. It comprises about 59,030 hectares of low deciduous forest, although in its highest parts there are oak and pine forests.

Within the mountains there are 71 species of mammals, 208 birds, 53 reptiles, 18 amphibians, 44 butterflies and 14 fish species. However, what makes it unique is that it is the natural reserve with the most endemic species in one place.

In the town of El Limón there are some cabins, interpretive trails, a mine and a herpetarium. All this framed by the Cruz Pintada Dam where you can enjoy water activities.
