The park covers an area of 45,711 hectares and is the habitat for over 900 plant species, as well as five amphibian species, 11 reptile species, 77 bird species, and 27 mammal species, of which 15 are endemic.
Within the park is La Malinche, an extinct volcano that is the fifth highest peak in Mexico. The imposing elevation is surrounded by a coniferous forest, and from its summit, there is an impressive panoramic view of three states: Puebla, Tlaxcala, and Veracruz.
While exploring the volcano, you may be amazed by places like the Barranca de San Juan and the ancient crater where traces of the glacial period can be seen.
There are some comfortable cabins in the park.
