Due to its physical appearance, this national park is also known as "Nauhcampatépetl," which in Nahuatl means "mountain or volcano with four sides."
It is one of the highest peaks in Mexico, standing at 4,282 meters above sea level. It offers a landscape surrounded by conifers, which are covered in snow during winter.
From its summit, when the dense clouds allow it, the landscape shows numerous secondary elevations, branches of basaltic rock or hardened lava pointing towards the Gulf of Mexico.
The ascent to the summit takes approximately 4 hours, and it is advisable to be accompanied by a guide, as it is easy to get lost in the mountain.
The best months of the year to climb are from October to January. However, hiking and rock climbing can be practiced throughout the year.
From its heights, you can appreciate the region of Xalapa and the peaks of Citlaltépec (Pico de Orizaba), Iztaccihuatl, and Popocatépetl.
