This is a unique natural passage located in the western part of the Zongolica mountain range. The area includes the lakes and the Otzelotzi volcano, amidst a mountainous region with forest vegetation.
The three lakes, although close to each other, are separated by the peaks of the Zongolica mountain range at an altitude of 2500 meters above sea level.
The Laguna Grande (Big Lagoon) is the most attractive one, both for its size and the intense blue-green color of its waters. Here, you can rent boats, and it also has pleasant cabins and several restaurants on its shores.
The other two lakes are known as Laguna Chica (Small Lagoon), which is brown, and Lagunilla, which is blue.
The lagoons are not suitable for swimming due to their depth, internal currents, and abundant aquatic vegetation. However, they are an excellent fishing spot where you can find a large quantity of bass, trout, and whitefish.
On the other hand, the Otzelotzi volcano has a base with a diameter of just over 2 km and an altitude of 3080 meters above sea level. There is a trail to reach the highly eroded crater of the volcano, which provides a great reward for the effort of climbing it, as on clear days you can see the country's three tallest volcanoes: Pico de Orizaba, Popocatépetl, and Iztaccíhuatl.
If you can visit this place on the last day of the year, you will witness a unique spectacle as the entire community accompanies the priest to celebrate a mass at the summit of the volcano. It's impressive to see all the candles lit along the 500-meter path that separates the town from the volcano's peak.
