The lagoon has brackish water, as it combines water from the hills and seawater. Saltwater predominates at the entrance, while freshwater can be found in the canals.
It is one of the areas with the highest biological diversity in Veracruz, as it is surrounded by coastal jungle where you can find approximately 800 plant species and over 300 bird species.
During your journey, you can be amazed by 69 species of mangroves, including black, white, and red varieties.
There are also dunes, lowland jungle, and an interesting reef area.
In the vicinity of the lagoon, there are some interpretive trails, and on the beach, there are informal restaurants offering coastal cuisine delicacies.
