It is a beautiful lagoon with crystal-clear emerald waters that reflect the lush vegetation surrounding it. Moreover, it is located in a historic place, as it is said to be where Hernán Cortés and Malinche got married, making this municipality the birthplace of the mestizo culture.
You can swim in the lagoon since most of it is not very deep, but keep in mind that the water is very cold as it comes from the melting of the majestic Pico de Orizaba. However, if you prefer not to get wet, you can take a boat ride and enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the area.
There are several trails around the lagoon that lead to beautiful natural spots such as the Cueva de las Hadas (Fairy Cave), named so because locals claim it is home to some mystical beings. In general, if you have the opportunity to talk to some of the locals, they might tell you stories about shape-shifters (nahuales) and other legends.
During Holy Week, the Laguna Festival takes place, which includes parades, dances, and music.
Currently, it has been developed into a natural spa, and there are establishments offering typical food.
