This is a cave located within the city center of Xalapa, which makes it a unique place.
The cave is of volcanic origin and is an enigmatic place where you can see strange rock formations along with some orchid species, hence its name.
Around 1,500 B.C., it was used as the tomb of an important ruler, as a rich offering was found alongside the body, including clay vessels, a decorated yoke, and stone axes.
The cave was forgotten with the city's growth and it wasn't until 1943 when a worker noticed a large hole. In the subsequent years, it was used as a landfill.
Until 1995, efforts were made to recover the cave, during which over 15 tons of garbage were removed. In 2011, it was definitively rehabilitated to become an eco-tourism attraction of the city.
It's important to note that access is sometimes restricted, and you should always go accompanied by a guide.
