This freshwater natural pool connected to the sea is surrounded by mangroves and is an ecological reserve.
Flamingos abound in the lagoon from April to October, and it is very common to see dolphins roaming the shores of Yalahao.
In ancient times, it was an important port for Mayan traders, and rejuvenating qualities are attributed to it. Legends speak of people feeling up to 10 years younger after immersing themselves in its waters.
Another legend is related to the famous pirate Francisco de Molas, who is said to have buried his treasure in the lagoon and sacrificed the servant who helped him in order to keep the treasure's location a secret. It is said that the servant's head can be seen at night right where the treasure is said to be.
The sunsets at this cenote are magnificent, and there are some tours that offer the opportunity to enjoy this unique spectacle.
