Surrounded by abundant vegetation, it gets its name from its dark color and is the smallest of the four cenotes in the Bacalar Lagoon.
It has a diameter of 130 meters, and the depth ranges from one and a half meters to almost 100 meters, as it is a natural precipice. The buoyancy is affected by the strong water pressure, so it is advisable to take precautions when approaching the deep side of the cenote.
It is also known as the Witch's Cenote due to a local legend that tells of an old woman who lived on the cenote's banks, surrounded by dolls. Due to urbanization of the area, she was forced to leave as a school would be built there. However, it was difficult to remove her from the land, and in the end, she cast a spell saying that anyone who stepped on this land would fall ill or even lose their life. The locals took this curse very seriously and performed a series of rituals to undo it.
You can reach it by boat, sailboat, car, or even by bicycle, as the main entrance is on Avenida Costera.
At the cenote, you can go diving, but you need to be accompanied by a professional guide. During the dive, you can find whimsical rock formations, small canyons, and walls.
