Santa Maria Bay is another natural treasure of Sinaloa. Its coastline stretches approximately 80 km and is home to 153 islets inhabited by 303 species of birds, including some endemic and migratory ones.
You can visit the islands of Saliaca, Tachichilte, La Garrapata, El Mero, and Altamura. The last mentioned is particularly remarkable, as it consists of a vast strip of sand dunes that resemble a mountain between the sea and the lagoon system, creating an incredible landscape.
The El Rancho Island stands out as it serves as a nesting place for hundreds of blue-footed boobies, although you can also spot frigatebirds, seagulls, Canadian ducks, and pelicans, among many other species.
There is another beautiful islet of white sand called "la coyoitía." This tiny site was a ceremonial center for the Cahita indigenous people, where they would gather for their rituals.
In the bay, you can savor delicious dishes made from fresh fish and seafood, especially hacha scallops, oysters, clams, and crabs, as the area serves as a natural breeding ground for these species.
