The zoo covers 32 hectares and is located just 10 km from Toluca on the grounds of the former Zacango hacienda, which dates back to the 16th century.

The park is divided into 7 zones: aviary, carnivores, primates, herbivores, African, education center for conservation, and farm. The tour can be done on foot or by train.

It is one of the largest zoos in Latin America, with over 700 animals from 131 species from all continents. The zoo was structured into areas according to the type and origin of the fauna. For example, the African fauna area recreates the savanna environment and is home to families of rhinoceroses and elephants, among others. The bird or aviary area was designed to accommodate different species; the aquarium features colorful fish, and the serpentarium houses a collection of snakes from different species and origins. The children's zoo houses the offspring born within the park and provides them with specialized care.

Within the zoo, there are areas for children's entertainment such as "Plaza Cri-cri," where the most famous characters from the songs of the Cricket Singer are located, as well as a sandbox and playground.

There are also two small artificial lakes where you can rent a boat and row. In the main building of the former hacienda, the rooms were adapted to house the Museum of Natural History, where dioramas and taxidermied animals recreate their natural habitats.

The old chapel now serves as a movie theater and a crafts store. Other services provided within the park include pony and carriage rentals for touring the zoo, food sales, soda fountain, guided tours, parking, and restrooms.
