Templo de la Santa Veracruz
The Temple of the Holy Cross dates back to 1753 and was built on the site where there was a small chapel constructed by the Franciscans in the 16th century.
It has a simple Baroque-style facade with a tower featuring hexagonal details and paired columns. It also contains an ornate clock.
Inside, it houses an impressive piece known as the Black Christ, which has a legend associated with it. According to the story, this figure used to be the most beautiful in the place, but an envious priest poisoned the wine used in the liturgical offering, which was absorbed by the Christ, turning it black and causing it to shrink.
In fact, believers claim that whenever something bad happens in Toluca, the Christ shrinks even more.
