This church dates back to 1675 and was built by the Jesuits.
A century later, when members of this religious order were expelled, the government handed over the church to the Mitra of Michoacán.
This church served as a replacement for the Metropolitan Cathedral during its renovation from 1855 to 1868.
It consists of two separate naves, each with its niches and columns. It has a simple Baroque facade made of quarry stone, featuring two levels, each with a double column on each side. At the top, there is a simple window.
Its interior is decorated in a neoclassical style, and the magnificent Cristo de la Caña dating from the 16th century stands out.
On one of its walls, the Foundation Cross is attached, precisely marking the place where the city was founded. It was initially commemorated with a crude cross made of mesquite wood, which was later replaced by a carved stone cross.
