Lake Chapala has become the home of the white pelicans, from November to April. More specifically, in Michoacán they are located on Petatán Island, in the municipality of Cojumatán de Régules. 

This is one of the largest birds in the Americas reaching a wingspan of 2.4 to 2.9 m, while from beak to tail it is approximately 1.75 m long and weighs up to 7 kg.

In the lake it has been possible to observe colonies that number up to more than 20 thousand specimens.
