The reserve covers 147,000 hectares and encompasses both terrestrial and marine ecosystems, resulting in a tremendous ecological diversity.
It includes mountainous areas, small valleys, coastal areas, islands, estuaries, bays, and pelagic environments.
Within the reserve, you can find the El Nacapule and Las Barajitas canyons, as well as other large canyons in the Sierra El Aguaje, where soil and moisture conditions have given rise to flora and vegetation with distinctly tropical elements.
There is a mountain range that runs through the area parallel to the coastline. Its difficult access has allowed for the preservation of a large number of endemic species. This reserve is home to 239 plant species distributed among 54 families and over 1,400 species of fauna.
