A natural wonder of Mexico recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. The reserve covers 144,530 hectares with an astonishing diversity of flora and wildlife.

El Cielo combines the two most important eco-regions of the Americas: the Neotropical and the Nearctic. This means that within the reserve, you can find both warm and cold climate vegetation and fauna. Here, you can admire everything from tropical rainforests to deserts, passing through humid temperate forests (cloud forests) and dry temperate forests (pine forests).

Its formation dates back 65 million years when it was covered in water and gradually emerged, giving shape to a region with a great variety of caves, crevices, underground galleries, and mountain walls. That is why marine fossil remains have been found here.

It boasts a rich diversity of flora and wildlife, including 92 species of mammals, 430 species of birds, 25 species of amphibians, 60 species of reptiles, 1,128 species of plants, 72 species of orchids, 924 species of insects, and 481 species of fungi.

One of the most visited places in El Cielo Reserve is the community of San José. On the journey from Gómez Farías to San José, you can admire the beauty of the landscape amid exotic plants and hundreds of birds. In San José, you can take a 20-kilometer hike to the Cueva del Agua, where you will find troglobitic fauna characterized by the lack of eyes and pigmentation.

Some of the recommended places within the reserve include Casa de Piedra, La Gloria, El Elefante, Joya de Manantiales, and the various caves and caverns found within the reserve.

It is a true paradise for nature lovers and ecotourism enthusiasts, as you can explore and enjoy various climates, landscapes, flora, and fauna.

The reserve offers comfortable cabins, and you can explore caves, hike trails, enjoy waterfalls, streams, and pools, go camping, birdwatching, butterfly watching, horseback riding, and engage in various activities.
